The Sweeney

Difference

A diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes changes the life of a child forever. Days filled with school, sports, and activities are quickly replaced by blood tests, insulin injections, and carbohydrate calculations. Every step required to manage their diabetes is a step away from what children see as “normal.” But at Camp Sweeney, Type 1 diabetes is normal. And when diabetes disappears, every camper can show what makes them special, not what makes them different.

Up first, we have Nadia Stanback. Hear from Nadia why she loves the Play for the Day!

"My family and I participate in the Sweeney 5K for a very simple reason; we LOVE Sweeney! I have been going to Camp Sweeney since I was 4yrs old (Yes! Since Tots Camp) and I can not imagine a Summer without it. Camp Sweeney is easily my favorite part about having T1D because it gives me the chance to have fun and be around people who have T1D just like me. The Sweeney 5K lets me share my love for Sweeney with the people closer to my home. Last year, at the run, I met a girl who had never been to camp and I told her how cool it was. Her mom talked to my mom and I ended up seeing her at camp that Summer! I look forward to Play For The Day every Memorial Day!"
