Beyond Medical
Experience
“I always had a desire to go to medical school, but I truly found my passion for the field during my summer at Camp Sweeney. As a counselor, not only do you receive hands-on experience with a life-long disease like Type 1 Diabetes, but you also learn compassion, resilience, humility, and patient care. Camp Sweeney teaches you communication skills and connecting with your campers that cannot be learned from a textbook. No other experience has given me more joy. Thank you, Camp Sweeney, for lighting the fire in my heart for medicine and proving this is the career for me.”

Caring for
People
“My summer at Camp Sweeney was such a unique experience that helped me prepare for medical school. At Sweeney, counselors and campers alike learn to look past diabetes. We learn to treat symptoms, but more importantly we learn to treat each other with respect. Having the chance to be a counselor for these amazing kids allowed me to gain a new insight into how everyone is unique and special despite being bound by a certain disease, an important skill that translates into working with patients seen during my time in medical school.”
